NFL Wins Above replacement (WAR)

Model created by: Ron Yurko (@Stat_Ron), Sam Ventura (@stat_sam), and Maksim Horowitz (@bklynmaks). For details on NFL WAR, read their original paper here: https://arxiv.org/abs/1802.00998

Application created by: Sean Clement (@SeanFromSeabeck)

Application Overview

This application was created as a way for those without any coding or R background to explore and make use of the NFL WAR data created by the above authors. Whether you don't have a background with coding in R, or just want a easy to use interface I hope you find this application useful.

Tab Review

Instructions

Each tab contains a different slice of the overall data set. To use, simply click the tab you are interested in, and select the filters you want.

If you would like to suppress the sidebar menu, click the three lines at the top of the application. Click them again to make the menu reappear.

Keep in mind that each tab is a seperate data set and some are much larger than others. If nothing appears, wait a couple of seconds and then the data should have time to load.

EPA model WAR

This tab allows the user to explore and visualize the wins above replacement model constructed using expected points added (EPA) as the main metric. Users have the option of filtering by position, WAR type, year, season.

This tab also includes a subtab for you to look at the raw data and download it. Be sure to specify the filetype as .csv when downloading.

WPA model WAR

This tab allows the user to explore and visualize the wins above replacement model constructed using win probability added (EPA) as the main metric. Users have the option of filtering by position, WAR type, year, season.

This tab also includes a subtab for you to look at the raw data and download it. Be sure to specify the filetype as .csv when downloading.

WPA model Simulations

This tab is a run of 1000 simulations per player, per year based on the WPA model above. This allowes you to get a sense of how confident the model is in an individuals performance over a one year period. This tab allows you to specify WAR type, position, and what seasons you would like to look at.

UPDATES AND BUG FIXES

18SEPT18

This version incorporates:

  1. Tabular data now include an option for looking at the selected WAR type cumulatively.
  2. Tablular data now rounded to 2 decimal places.
  3. Simulation plots now displayed in descending order of selected war but simulation average.
